MS. Heb. d. 36/5

Contents

Fol. 13
An appeal (beg. missing) by a Karaite to his brethren to gather in Jerusalem, since Islam is favourable to Karaism

The author condemns the use of magic, and lays down that the tetragrammaton should only be pronounced אדני. He explains the word נקב (Lev. xxiv. 16), in Arabic and Persian, as follows (fol. 13 bis):

בנקבו שם יומת. ודעו כי פתרון ונוקב בלשון ישמעאלי ומֻשרח ומוביין יעני מן יפסר אסם אללה באלהגא ובלשון פרסי ונוקב ופראיקון אן כי פירא קונד ומענֵי הוא הזכרת שם בעליו כ̇כ̇ אשר נקבו בשמות ולא יוכל אחד מיש̇ לפתור נקבו בשמות בלשון קללה;

further on the author says,

ועתה הזהרו ואל תזכירו שם יי̇י חוץ אדני באלף דלת אשר היה דעתי על זכרון יי̇י כתבתי אליכם. ואתם חקרו הדבר בחכמתכם פן תעשו בחכמתי להשען על דעתי כי כל הנשען בתקליד על אחד ממלמדי גלות ולא יחקור היטב בחכמתו הוא כעובד עבדה נכריה.

In another place (fol. 16) the following words occur:

כי מתחלת גלות היו רבנין שרים ושופטים בימי מלכות יון ובמלכין יון ובמלכות רומיים ומגוסים פרסיים ולא יכלו דורשי תורה לפתוח פיהם במצות יי̇י מפחד רבנין כי היו ... עד בוא מלכות ישמעאל כי הם עוזרין תמיד לקראין לשמור בתורת משה ועלינו לברך אותם עתה אתם בתוך מלכות ישמעאל והם אוהבים לשומרי חודש.
